The only possible Italian paraphrase of Shakespeare at breakfast, Le città di pianura is a road movie steeped in alcohol, rebellion and a melancholy that never gives way to defeatism and nihilism. Sossai mixes Italian comedy with Jarmusch and Kaurismaki, and traces a geographical, anthropological and psychological map of a territory that is as physical (the Veneto province) as it is interior, to recount the stubborn and thwarted desire to live a life whose secrets and meaning always elude us."

Carlobianchi e Doriano, due spiantati cinquantenni, hanno un’ossessione: andare a bere l’ultimo bicchiere. Una notte, vagando in macchina da un bar all’altro, si imbattono per caso in Giulio, un timido studente di architettura: l’incontro con questi due improbabili mentori trasformerà profondamente Giulio nel suo modo di vedere il mondo e l’amore, e di immaginare il futuro.
