The Irish Film Berlin Festival is both a celebration of Irish cinema and a cultural and social event that brings people together throughout St. Patrick’s Week.

With a blend of thought-provoking documentaries, dynamic feature films, and a curated selection of shorts, there’s something for everyone. Come for the screenings and stay for the craic – we’ll have live music sessions too!

Now in its fourth year and expanded to over 20 selected films, the festival takes audiences on a journey through Ireland's past and present, weaving music throughout the programme. This year, the focus is on Dublin.

TONIGHT On Friday, the festival opens with the award-winning independent film Girls and Boys. Set in modern-day Dublin, the film explores complex and intimate relationships where not everything is immediately revealed

The Oscar- and BAFTA-winning Banshees of Inisherin concludes the opening night with its darkly dramatic tale – gruesome enough to rival any Friday the 13th.

We are also proud to present a retrospective of the films of one of Ireland’s finest actors, Cillian Murphy.

Saturday celebrates Ireland’s land, stories, and songs, from Listen to the Land Speak to a tasty “SPICE BAG” of shorts. Music runs through the programme, from the Irish soul swagger of The Commitments [OmU] to the disappearing late-night trad venues explored in Farewell to Hughes`s

The shorts programme will showcase new Irish-Berlin filmmakers and includes the world premiere of the hilarious Snot Rocket (Shorts Selection - SPICE BAG ) 

Meanwhile,  The Commitments [OmU]  – probably Ireland’s favourite film – celebrates its 35th anniversary.

Sunday traces the pulse of rebellion and resilience, with a child’s-eye view of a Dublin changed by heroin in Spilt Milk, the tribute In Time  to folk legend Donal Lunny, and the roar of punk in IOutsider Artists -The Story of Paranoid Visions.

We continue on Monday with Sanatorium, an Irish-produced documentary set in Odesa, Ukraine, where even in wartime people attempt to find moments of rest and healing.

The evening concludes with a screening of The Wind That Shakes The Barley  – a powerful tale from Ireland’s wars.

On Tuesday, St. Patrick’s Day, we celebrate two very different Patricks with Patrick`s Day and Breakfast On Pluto [OmU]. We close on Wednesday with Small Things Like These, where buried secrets stir within a tightly bound community.

Beim Irish Film Berlin Festival geht es nicht nur darum, die Bandbreite des irischen Films zu zeigen – es ist ein Kulturfestival, das Menschen in der St.-Patricks-Woche zusammenführt. Mit einer Mischung aus Dokumentarfilmen, die zum Nachdenken anregen, energiegeladenen Spielfilmen und einer kuratierten Auswahl an Kurzfilmen bietet es für jeden etwas. Kommt wegen der Filme und bleibt für den Craic (Spaß in Grün!) – neben den Filmvorführungen erwarten euch auch Live-Musik-Sessions!

Nun im vierten Jahr und auf über 20 ausgewählte Filme erweitert, führt das Festival die Zuschauerinnen und Zuschauer auf eine Reise durch die Vergangenheit und Gegenwart Irlands sowie durch seine vielfältige Musikkultur. In diesem Jahr liegt der regionale Fokus auf Dublin.

Außerdem zeigen wir eine Retrospektive über einen der herausragendsten irischen Schauspieler: Cillian Murphy.

Am Freitag eröffnet das Festival mit dem preisgekrönten Independent-Film „Girls & Boys“. Angesiedelt im heutigen Dublin erkundet der Film komplexe und intime Beziehungen, in denen sich nicht alles sofort offenbart.

Der mit Oscar und BAFTA ausgezeichnete Film „The Banshees of Inisherin“ beschließt den Eröffnungsabend mit seiner düster-dramatischen Geschichte – grausig genug, um es mit jedem „Freitag, dem 13.“ aufzunehmen.

Der Samstag widmet sich Irlands Landschaften, Geschichten und Liedern. Das Programm reicht von Filmen wie „Listen to the Land Speak“ über eine exquisite Auswahl an Kurzfilmen in „Spice Bag“ bis hin zum irischen Soul von „The Commitments“ sowie dem Dokumentarfilm „Farewell to Hughes’s“ über den Verlust traditioneller Musikpubs.

Das Kurzfilmprogramm präsentiert neue irisch-berlinerische Filmschaffende und zeigt die Weltpremiere der urkomischen Komödie „Snot Rocket“. Gleichzeitig feiert „The Commitments“ – wahrscheinlich Irlands beliebtester Film – sein 35-jähriges Jubiläum.

Der Sonntag folgt dem Puls von Rebellion und Widerstandskraft – mit einem kindlichen Blick auf ein durch Heroin verändertes Dublin in „Spilt Milk“, der Hommage „In Time“ an die Folk-Legende Donal Lunny und dem Aufschrei des Punk in „Outsider Artists – The Story of Paranoid Visions“.

Am Montag geht es weiter mit „Sanatorium“. Der irisch produzierte Dokumentarfilm zeigt behutsam, wie die ukrainische Bevölkerung in Kriegszeiten versucht, sich während einer Ruhepause in Odessa zu erholen. Der Abend endet mit einer Vorführung von „The Wind That Shakes the Barley“ – einer kraftvollen Geschichte aus Irlands Kriegszeiten.

Am Dienstag, dem St. Patrick’s Day, feiern wir mit „Patrick’s Day“ und „Breakfast on Pluto“ zwei sehr unterschiedliche Patricks.. 

Am Mittwoch findet das Festival schließlich seinen Ausklang mit „Small Things Like These“ – einer eindrucksvollen Geschichte über verdrängte gesellschaftliche Stigmata, die den Alltag erschüttern und die eigene Zivilcourage herausfordern.
