A late masterpiece by Stiller that tends towards the experimental - very serious, filled with beautiful pathos and fiercely naturalistic in its scenes of the Ren drive. And then again like a perplexed staggering when Nils tries to find his way out of the hall of mirrors of his soul.

In his literary adaptation based on Selma Lagerlöf, Maurice Stiller combines the family drama of an adult son with his domineering, strict overbearing mother with the tragic struggle of the main character in the ice storm of the north. These nature shots are breathtaking.

Gunnar träumt von einer Karriere als Musiker. Doch als sein Vater plötzlich stirbt, bestimmt ihn seine Familie dazu, das väterliche Geschäft weiterzuführen. Widerwillig fügt er sich, züchtet und handelt mit Rentieren, was ihm weder zusagt noch liegt.

Doch dann wirft ein Unfall sein Leben und das seiner Familie völlig aus der Bahn. Entstanden nach einem Roman von Selma Lagerlöf ist Stillers Drama ein frühes Meisterwerk skandinavischer Filmkunst.

Gunnar Hede, a young Swedish man, wants to become a professional musician, but when his father suddenly dies he is pressured by his family to take over the family business, raising and selling reindeer. He doesn't like the business and isn't suited for it, but he gives in and takes over.

However, when he is badly injured one day in an accident while driving the herd over the frozen Arctic and sustains some serious head trauma, his family fears that he may be permanently mentally damaged and they may lose both Gunnar and the family business.
