BE KIND - A gentle journey into diversity

A film by Sabrina Paravicini and Nino Monteleone "Being different is like an elephant with a short trunk: a rarity".

Thus stated Nino, a twelve-year-old who was diagnosed with severe but not serious childhood autism at the age of two and a half.

After he stopped talking and looking his mother in the eye, his inner isolation threatened the interaction with others, with the world, every day.

Today, Nino is the protagonist, the center, the fulcrum of a film that concerns not only those with whom he shares his particularity, but all those who, in one way or another, are different.

Different because they are marginalized, different because they are part of a minority, different because of their sexual orientation, different because of another ethnicity, religion, culture than that of the country in which they live.

BE KIND is a self-produced film, almost familiar, born from the desire of Sabrina Paravicini to give a gift to her son, during the months of shooting it turned into a real movie and tells the journey of Nino as a small director of a different person within diversity, understood not as a difference, but as a richness in variety.

The idea of the film stems from a question from his mother:

"Would you like to tell about yourself?" He accepted.

The mother, actress and director Sabrina Paravicini, accompanies him on a physical but above all an emotional journey, where each stage represents a meeting with people who tell the experiences through the sharing of their stories.

Nino becomes a Virgil who leads us, therefore, into the world of human variety, where we meet men and women who share in their lives.

Teaching us how kindness is the only way to really get in touch with others, the only tool that predisposes us to listen to others without pietistic attitudes or mere curiosity, moving the real desire to discover still unknown human realities. The presence of the writer Roberto Saviano, with whom Nino converses on the theme of happiness according to the theory of Epicurus, of the actor Fortunato Cerlino who helps a young actor on the autistic spectrum to prepare the mother scene of Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver and of the astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti who tells Nino the value of diversity, will alternate with so many encounters, so many stories that will make up a great story with a happy ending: a story that speaks of exceeded limits, hope, experimentation, kindness and happiness possible for everyone .

Because in the end, we are all different from everyone. And this makes the existence so pleasant and pleasantly surprising.

Un viaggio gentile all’interno della diversità

Un film di Sabrina Paravicini e Nino Monteleone «Essere diversi è come un elefante con la proboscide corta: una rarità».

Lo afferma Nino, un bambino di dodici anni a cui è stato diagnosticato a due anni e mezzo un autismo infantile severo, ma non grave.

Dopo aver smesso di parlare e di guardare sua madre negli occhi, il suo isolamento interiore minacciava ogni giorno di più l’interazione con gli altri, con il mondo.

Oggi, Nino è il protagonista, il centro, il fulcro di un film che riguarda non solo coloro con cui condivide la sua particolarità, ma tutti quelli che, in un modo o nell’altro, sono diversi. Diversi perché emarginati, diversi perché parte di una minoranza, diversi per il loro orientamento sessuale, diversi perché di un’altra etnia, religione, cultura rispetto a quella del Paese in cui vivono.

BE KIND è un film autoprodotto, quasi familiare, nato dal desiderio di Sabrina Paravicini di fare un regalo al proprio figlio, nel corso dei mesi di lavorazione si è trasformato in un vero e proprio film e racconta il viaggio da piccolo regista di una persona diversa all’interno della diversità, intesa non come differenza, ma come ricchezza nella varietà. L’idea del film nasce da una domanda di sua madre: «Ti andrebbe di raccontarti?».Lui ha accettato.

La mamma, l’attrice e regista Sabrina Paravicini, lo accompagna in un percorso fisico ma soprattutto emotivo, dove ogni tappa rappresenta un incontro con persone che raccontano le esperienze attraverso la condivisione delle loro storie. Nino diventa un Virgilio che ci conduce, quindi, nel mondo della varietà umana, dove incontriamo uomini e donne che ci rendono partecipi delle loro vite. Insegnandoci come la gentilezza sia il solo modo per entrare davvero in contatto con gli altri, il solo strumento che ci predispone all’ascolto dell’altro senza atteggiamenti pietistici o di mera curiosità, muovendo il reale desiderio di scoprire realtà umane ancora sconosciute.

La presenza dello scrittore Roberto Saviano, con cui Nino conversa sul tema della felicità secondo la teoria di Epicuro, dell’attore Fortunato Cerlino che aiuta un giovane attore nello spettro autistico a prepara le scena madre di Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver e dell’astronauta Samantha Cristoforetti che racconta a Nino il valore della diversità, si alternerà a tanti incontri, tante vicende che comporranno un grande racconto a lieto fine: un racconto che parla di limiti superati, di speranza, di sperimentazioni, di gentilezza e di felicità possibile per tutti.

Perché, alla fine, tutti siamo diversi da tutti. Proprio questo rende l’esistere così piacevole e piacevolmente sorprendente. Be Kind è stato proiettato in concorso in anteprima mondiale alla 64esima edizione del Taormina Film Fest e ha avuto una menzione speciale da parte della giuria con la seguente motivazione: “Per lo straordinario impegno e talento nel dare una dimensione di dignità e comprensione ovvero amore a chi è diverso”.

E’ stato in proiezione alla 13esima edizione della Festa di Roma come Evento Speciale per scuole e stampa.

E’ stato in concorso al Human Rights Festival di Orvieto a novembre 2018 dove Nino ha vinto una menzione speciale della giuria come migliore protagonista.

Sabrina Paravicini è la regista di BE KIND.

Autrice, regista e attrice, ha lavorato con registi come Maurizio Nichetti, Mario Monicelli, Gianluca Tavarelli, Carlo Lizzani. Ha pubblicato libri di narrativa con Baldini & Castoldi, Feltrinelli e Rizzoli.

Nino Monteleone è co-regista di BE KIND, ha dodici anni e ha la sindrome di Asperger.

A oggi è il più giovane regista italiano iscritto ufficialmente alla SIAE. Il suo sogno è di incontrare il regista Tim Burton e regalargli il suo piccolo romanzo.

Lorenzo Messia per BE KIND ha realizzato fotografia, riprese e montaggio. Romano classe 1989, nel 2013 cura fotografia e montaggio del documentario “Medea dalla Cassia a New York”.
