On October 30, dramaturg, television editor, and film producer Martin Wiebel will give a lecture on Rosenstrasse by Margarethe von Trotta.

The film recounts the protest by a group of women against the imprisonment of their Jewish husbands.

During the so‑called Fabrikaktion (Factory Action) of February 1943 in Berlin, the last Jewish men in the city – previously spared deportation because they were married to German wives – were rounded up and imprisoned in a building on Rosenstrasse.

The women held a days-long protest in front of the building; eventually, their husbands were released.

Rosenstrasse was internationally regarded as an important contribution to confronting German history. The film received numerous awards: Katja Riemann won Best Actress at the Venice International Film Festival in 2003, and in 2004 von Trotta received her second David di Donatello for Best European Film.

Lena Fischers Geschichte erzählt nicht nur von ihr selbst und der kleinen Ruth, sondern auch vom Widerstand aufrechter Frauen im Februar und März 1943, die als Demonstrantinnen in der Rosenstraße auf die Freilassung ihrer inhaftierten Angehörigen drängten. Für ihre Leistung in Margarethe von Trottas erstem Kinofilm seit "Das Versprechen" wurde Katja Riemann (alias Lena Fischer) in Venedig 2003 mit dem Goldenen Löwen ausgezeichnet.
