The film was praised by Italian and foreign critics for the direction and acting performances of the actors, as well as for the issues addressed related to patriarchal culture, gender violence and women's rights.
This film carries a message of incredible strength, told in simple but effective language, capable of getting to the heart of the matter and into the soul of those who believe that women's rights are non-negotiable.
It is a black and white film - neorealist style - shot in a Rome struggling to emerge from the misery of the Second World War with all the protagonists trying to survive that period of misery as best they could. But within that suffering was the double suffering of women, victims of that time and victims of men; husbands, brothers, in-laws.
The film was presented at the 18th edition of the Rome Film Festival in competition in the category ‘Progressive Cinema - Visions for the World of Tomorrow’, winning two awards, including the Special Jury Prize and a special mention as Best First Feature. It was then awarded as Film of the Year at the 2024 Nastri d'argento.
The film received 19 nominations at the David di Donatello Awards, making it the debut work with the highest number of nominations in the history of the award; on this occasion, it went on to win six awards.

Delia (Paola Cortellesi) ist Ehefrau und Mutter. Das sind die Rollen, die sie in der zweiten Hälfte der 1940er-Jahre definieren. Und das ist ihr genug. In dieser merkwürdigen Zeit am Ende des Krieges erlebt sie mit ihrer Familie das Elend und den Aufschwung hautnah mit. Ivano (Valerio Mastandrea) arbeitet hart, um die Familie über Wasser halten zu können und lässt keine Gelegenheit aus, um das zu betonen. Respekt zeigt er nur gegenüber seinem Vater Sor Ottorino (Giorgio Colangeli).
Die einzige Abwechslung für Delia ist ihre Freundin Marisa (Emanuela Fanelli), in der sie eine Vertraute gefunden hat, mit der sie Geheimnisse teilen kann. Als Delia eines Tages ein mysteriöser Brief erreicht, fasst sie den Mut, sich mehr für ihre Zukunft zu wünschen.
