Die vierzehnjährige Mouchette lebt mit ihrem alkoholkranken Vater, ihrer sterbenden Mutter und einem Säugling in großer Armut. Fourteen-year-old Mouchette lives in extreme poverty with her alcoholic father, her dying mother and an infant. She is humiliated at school and must assume responsibility for her family at home. During a storm, she becomes lost in the woods and seeks shelter with the poacher Arsène, who takes advantage of her vulnerability. Upon her return, the village meets her with ridicule and contempt. Adapted from Georges Bernanos, Bressons film portrays a child to whom the world scarcely allows a place where she can exist free from violence.
