A counterfeit 500-franc note is put into circulation by two teenagers and passes through a photography shop into the hands of Yvon, a heating-oil deliveryman. When he attempts to use it as payment, he is arrested. Although he knew nothing of the forgery, he loses his job and is drawn ever deeper into a cycle of lies, poverty, imprisonment and violence. Adapted from Tolstoys novella The Forged Coupon, Bressons final film traces the journey of a banknote and shows how a seemingly minor deception can destroy the life of an innocent man.
