Marcello Clerici hatte eine schwere Kindheit. Sein Vater war in einer psychischen Heilanstalt und seine Mutter drogenabhängig. Zu seiner Homosexualität konnte er selber unter den gesellschaftlichen Repressionen auch nicht stehen.

Ein weiteres Ereignis, das ihn prägte, ereignete sich, als er 13 Jahre alt war und einen Chauffeur erschoss, der ihn sexuell missbrauchen wollte. Als Erwachsener schlug er im faschistischen Italien die Laufbahn eines Beamten ein und heiratete eine kleinbürgerliche, nicht besonders intelligente Frau namens Giulia (Stefania Sandrelli).

Dem Geheimdienst bot er an, während seiner Flitterwochen in Paris Professor Luca Quadri (Enzo Tarascio) auszuspionieren, von dem vermutet wird, Anführer einer antifaschistischen Gruppe zu sein. Als er dort ankommt, werden die Dinge jedoch komplizierter, als er es sich vorgestellt hat.
