Este documental registra la memoria de las luchas de la comunidad del resguardo indígena Coconuco en el Cauca¸ que por cédula real del siglo dieciocho tiene derecho a 10.000 hectáreas, y en 1971 apenas dispone de 1.500. Se recrea un proceso que va de la sumisión a la organización pues para nosotros¸ refieren en la película, la tierra no es sólo un pedazo de loma sino que como vivimos en ella, como gozamos o sufrimos con ella, es la raíz de la vida. Entonces la defendemos como la raíz de nuestra cultura.

The film documents the struggles of the Indigenous Coconuco community in Cauca, which holds a royal decree from the 18th century granting it rights to 10,000 hectares of land, yet by 1971 had access to only 1,500. It portrays the communitys journey from submission to collective organizing. As the film explains: For us, the land is not just a piece of hillside. Because we live on it, and share its joys and sufferings, it is the root of life. That is why we defend it as the root of our culture.

Der Film dokumentiert den Kampf der indigenen Gemeinschaft von Coconuco im Departamento Cauca. Obwohl ihr durch eine königliche Urkunde aus dem 18. Jahrhundert 10.000 Hektar Land zugesprochen wurden, standen ihr 1971 nur noch 1.500 Hektar zur Verfügung. Der Film zeichnet den Weg von Unterwerfung hin zu gemeinschaftlicher Organisation nach. Wie es im Film heißt: Für uns ist das Land nicht nur ein Stück Berghang. Weil wir auf ihm leben und mit ihm Freude und Leid teilen, ist es die Wurzel des Lebens. Deshalb verteidigen wir es als die Wurzel unserer Kultur.
