BERLATIN Screenings: THE SOCIAL SIN [OmeU] + Special Guest, 82 Min

Within the vibrant tapestry of our BERLATIN Screenings, Friday, November 21st at 8pm marks the German premiere of THE SOCIAL SIN (El Pecado Social), a searing and essential cinematic voice from Peru directed by Juan Carlos Goicochea.

This poignant documentary feature, a recipient of an Honourable Mention and Best Direction at the Festival de Lima, invites us into the fragile world of Roger, a former rural teacher in the Peruvian Amazonia. After 25 years shrouded in silence, Roger bravely confronts the echoes of a brutal past, seeking justice for his trans sister, murdered by the Peruvian MRTA guerrilla, while battling the deep-seated trauma of his own abduction during Peru's period of political violence.

Its powerful narrative, unfolding amidst a society grappling with homophobia and exclusion, and further shaken by a devastating earthquake, masterfully portrays Roger’s agonizing choice: to suppress his truth or embrace the arduous path toward self-acceptance and healing. Goicochea crafts an urgent and deeply human portrait, illuminating how the personal struggle for dignity intertwines with the enduring scars of a nation. Join us for this vital exploration of memory, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of identity, a true highlight of our BERLATIN program.

The premiere is part of BERLATIN Screenings, our year-round showcase of Latin American cinema presenting the region's best stories to Berlin audiences. The series is organized by LATIN QUARTER Film Distribution in partnership with Kino Babylon.
