At Eternity’s Gate | A Julian Schnabel Film
At Eternity’s Gate is a journey inside the world and mind of a person who, despite skepticism, ridicule and illness, created some of the world’s most beloved and stunning works of art. This is not a forensic biography about the painter. It is about what it is to be an artist. It is fiction, and in the act of pursuing our goal, if we lean towards the divine light, we might even stumble onto the truth. The only way to describe a work of art is to make a work of art.
The making of art gives an opportunity to make a palpable body that expresses a reason to live, if such a thing exists. Even with all the violence and tragedy that has been associated with Van Gogh’s life, there is no doubt, his was a life lived rich with magic, profound communication with nature and the wonder of being. Van Gogh’s work is ultimately optimistic. His unique perspective is one whose belief and vision make visible and physical the inexpressible. He seems to have transgressed death and encouraged others to do the same.
For his mesmerizing performance in the central role, Willem Dafoe was nominated for Best Actor at the Academy Awards and Golden Globes, among others, and won Best Actor at the 75th Venice Film Festival.
